1002 – Data Dictionary Design and Updating

Background:  A Data Dictionary is used for managing GIS data collection projects.  They are used to efficiently collect features and attribute information alongside GPS or terrestrial positions.  Data Dictionaries define the types of features that you can collect in the field along with the appropriate attributes (questions about the features that are answered in the field).  Trimble’s Data Dictionary Editor also supports conditional attributing which dynamically adapts to previously entered attribute values for maximum efficiency.

Course Goals & Objectives:   The goal of this module is to show the user how to create, maintain and update a data dictionary using the Data Dictionary Editor.  We can use an existing data dictionary if you have one you wish to use as a starting point.  Ultimately this data dictionary will be uploaded to any Trimble data collection software for use in the field.

Prerequisites:  The user should be somewhat familiar with Pathfinder Office, the Data Transfer Utility and the concept of attributing.  A good prelude to this course is course "3002-Introduction to Pathfinder Office Software".
